It will be noticed that my instrumentation is a simplified version of Charles Wuorinen's "Janissary Music", a work written for Ray DesRoches, first performed in 1968. This was decided on as a show of my indebtedness to these two great musicians. The title is taken from Goethe's "Faust" (part one)
