This complex painting was held in the back of my mind throughout the writing of it in the hopes it would help establish formal integrity (Oh Youth!). A familiarity with the painting would help in the hearing of this work. The four types of man there depicted- teacher, subject, student and, as implied by the open book, mankind, are symbolically represented in my score. Although Stefan Wolpe's last great work "Piece for Trumpet and Seven Instruments" was at the time unknown to me, still this was no coincidence.
