I have long held the poem "On a Drop of Dew" by Andrew Marvel close to my heart but have never before considered setting it to music as there seemed no way to do it without having the music subservient to his great words. Having recently listened to some choral music by the 12th century composer Hildegard of Bingen a way finally presented itself. All rhythms were reduced to binary values assigned to exposition sections as uniform durations of 1/16, 2/16, 3/16, 4/16. 5/16, 6/16 and to development sections where the six various phrase durations were proportioned into 12 attack points all rounded off to the 1/16th. The melodic lines were constructed from twelve-tone pitch material distributed over all. I expect this very beautiful and meaningtul work to enjoy a long life.
