the Mobius (part two of the Gurdjieff Quartet)
violin, cello, piano, timpani
written for and first performed by:
The New Structures Ensemble
Peter Lieberson-conductor
23 pages (11"x14") duration ca. 8'This work was written immediately after "a Soliloquy" and uses the same row. It is in fact the very same piece only now a quartet: timpani, piano(dots) with violin, cello(lines). The form is a true mobius. The premiere was in the spring of 1976 at Carnegie Recital Hall and was reviewed for the New York Times by Donald Henahan where he called it "another example of post-Webern scientism." Yes. Good guess!
